In her present role as patron of the ...。当妻子成为一宗暴力罪案的受害者后，年青的丈夫带着妻儿搬到了一个科技先进，守卫森严的社区来逃避外面世界的种种危险。但是患上妄想症的妻子Kathy开始琢磨一连串的残忍谋杀案和新邻居的晚上驾车是否有牵连......。武七（赵丹 饰），是山东堂邑人，7岁丧父，与母亲乞讨为生，他想读书，靠打把式卖艺凑够钱，却遭学堂先生打骂，断了念头，母亲又因病去世。守孝完毕，武七出外做佣，经工友周大介绍，来张举人家当佣工，因他老实肯干，屡屡遭人欺负，只得婢女小桃帮助。小桃身世凄惨，7年前被逃亡的父母寄养在张举人家。后者篡改了卖身契，逼小桃就范。小桃的反抗最终失败，而武七的关心成为她最大的慰藉。某日，武七的老乡捎话，说其婶病重急用钱。憨厚的武七向张举人支取3年工钱，却被后者以假账相欺，武七争辩，反被诬为讹赖，遭到毒打，幸好小桃舍身相救，并请来了周大，才帮助武七逃走。武七气恨难消，不食不语，病倒3日。周大因此得罪张举人，被后者勾结官府判罪入狱，小桃也被迫卖给他人为妻。小桃挂记武七，在周大表弟李四指点下，终于见到武七。却没想到，吃尽文盲苦头的武七，立下了宏大的志愿——兴办义学……。
